Designing Custom Aluminum Extrusions: 5 Things to Consider

Posted By: Admin | Date: 20-04-2020

Whatever your application, custom aluminum extrusions are often an integral part of a project. In Florida, and throughout the United States, OD Metals supplies a range of aluminum alloys in the 6000 series. Our products are ideal for architectural, decorative, and structural applications. All of our 6000 series alloys are excellent in weathering outdoor elements (such as a marine environment).

When selecting custom aluminum extrusions, there are a number of variables to consider, all depending on the specific application. Clearly, choosing the right type of alloy is important, even as early as the design stage. This is because of the inherent properties of the product – everything from thickness, to tolerance, to finish. Most important is to work with highly experienced people.

Custom aluminum extrusions now available from OD Metals

OD Metals offers the most popular aluminum alloys in the 6000 series. Our alloy products include 6063-T6,Custom Aluminum Extrusion Profiles 6005-T5, and 6061-T6. We provide both standard and custom aluminum extrusions.

6063 is the most common of the alloys, with satisfactory mechanical properties. The material is heat treatable and also weldable. 6063 allows for complex shapes to be formed and finishes with a very smooth surface. This is an ideal product for window frames, doorframes, and signage.

6005 is an aluminum alloy with high “minimum composition” of aluminum. The most common forming process is extrusion, although this product can be forged or rolled. 6005 is typically heat treated to produce stronger metal temper (a process that toughens by reducing the brittleness).

6061 is an aluminum alloy that contains magnesium and silicon. This product has satisfactory mechanical properties, and has good weldability. 6061 is one of the most common aluminum alloys for general-purpose usage. The extruded product will machine well for any application.

Five Things to Consider with Custom Aluminum Extrusions

For anyone who works at designing aluminum extrusions, it’s important to consider the inherent strengths and weaknesses of the product with respect to the application (custom or standard).

Mechanical Strength

6063 aluminum alloys are known to have a low level of mechanical strength. That’s why they are the ideal option for trim, windows, and doors. 6061 aluminum alloys have moderate mechanical strength. The material machines well and can be used in a wide range of industrial applications.

Material Thickness

One of the more important elements when designing extrusions is the wall thickness of the final extrusion shape. When the extrusion shape is of uniform thickness, production is straightforward – when the thickness isn’t uniform the extrusion can be compromised during manufacturing.

Tolerance Range

With custom aluminum extrusions, tolerance range is absolutely fundamental with regard to the application. Here, it’s incumbent to refer to information provided from Aluminum Standards and Data (the foremost reference for aluminum product standards and information on aluminum).

Corner Radius

From a creative point of view, designers must consider “corner radius” when designing extrusion shapes. While some believe that corners must be square and sharp, today’s extrusion-die-tooling can produce rounded corners. NOTE:  custom extrusions do have limitations on the radius size.

Finishing Touch

Once an extrusion shape is created, a finishing touch may be required on the final product. There are many finishing applications available when creating a custom finish:  grinding and machining – chemical coating – drilling and punching. The key is to work with very experienced technicians.
